Module 15: Using AI in Social Media
AI technology has gained popularity in social media, and I believe that it has impacted the ways we communicate and create content. It has found its way into applications such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat where it is utilized every day regardless of users' knowledge about it. Filters, recommended videos, chatbots, and automatic captioning are just some examples of how AI is being used in the digital environment. As a result of gaining insight into AI from the lecture and additional sources, I have realized its pros and cons for society and social media users.
One significant benefit of AI in social media is its efficiency and usefulness. With AI, people can easily analyze trends, suggest content that the user might like and assist businesses in reaching their audiences. These days, many firms have started using AI technology to post and interact with customers, suggest captions, and come up with marketing strategies. I am already familiar with the benefits of AI in my personal and professional activities because I utilize it for organizing thoughts, improving my writing and creating social media content. AI can save me time and effort, which is very important when working on various assignments and communicating with others in a professional manner. AI can also assist small firms in competing against bigger corporations.
Another advantage of AI in social media is personalization. Social media uses AI technology to understand what the user likes to watch or interact with. That is why sometimes the app knows exactly what video or post you would like to see. In many cases, this makes the user experience more enjoyable because the content becomes more personalized. The application of AI technology can be beneficial in terms of creating additional accessibility features, such as automatic subtitles or image descriptions.
But at the same time, there are many reasons to be concerned about AI when it comes to social media. For instance, we can mention the problem of spreading misinformation and creating fake content. With the help of AI, it is possible to create highly realistic images, videos, and even audio. I believe that this aspect is the most dangerous one for a number of reasons. First, social media are already known for the high speed of spreading news. Thus, adding deepfake videos or AI-created content will make the process much faster and harder to control.
Privacy becomes yet another demerit. A large amount of data is collected from social media users for purposes of training artificial intelligence systems. Although this makes applications more user-friendly, there is always fear on how much information companies have on their individual customers. It is quite unsettling to realize just how much applications know about one’s search history and online behavior. Artificial intelligence technology could also have negative effects on psychological wellbeing through the provision of addictive content.
In general, I find artificial intelligence in social media both interesting and scary. There are numerous advantages to its use, particularly in areas such as communication, marketing, creativity, and convenience. However, there are issues that arise due to its rapid development, such as privacy, misinformation, and authenticity. Artificial intelligence is progressing very fast, and therefore, people need to be aware of it and use it accordingly. Overall, after reviewing the lecture and doing more research on the subject, I can say that AI will play a significant role in the future of social media.
